Grok Imagine image generator and photo editor

Describe a picture, or upload a photo and say what to change. Grok Imagine answers in about 20 seconds, and a text prompt can return two images at once.

What Grok Imagine did in our tests

The same prompts we gave every other model on this site, run on 2 November 2026. Nothing here is retouched.

Text to image

Golden-hour photography with a shallow depth of field

From one sentence about a paper boat, Grok Imagine produced an image that looks like a photograph taken at golden hour: a large red boat in sharp focus close to the lens, the sun low in the frame, warm mist and a soft, blurred background. It took 18 seconds. In the text run we counted, two images came back, so you can see two takes for the 5 credits.

The face stays the face

We asked for a navy blazer and studio lighting on a casual selfie. Grok Imagine kept the face, the hair and the expression, and gave a dark grey studio backdrop, a navy blazer and a white shirt. It cropped a little tighter around the head than the original. This took 24 seconds.

PromptPut him in a navy blue blazer with a white shirt, studio headshot lighting. Keep his face unchanged.

Text in the picture

Spelled right, but it ignored the script

Our neon-sign prompt asked for "OPEN LATE" in glowing cursive with a line underneath. Grok Imagine spelled both lines correctly, but it set the headline in rounded block neon tubes instead of cursive, and drew the second line as plain white text rather than neon. If the style of the lettering matters, GPT Image 2 followed the cursive instruction much more closely in the same test.

PromptA neon sign on a dark brick wall that reads "OPEN LATE" in glowing cursive letters, with smaller white text underneath that reads "Coffee and cake until midnight". Photo, night, shallow depth of field.
  • Words correct, style only partly followed
  • 18 seconds

Style change

Ask for anime if you want anime

The Studio Ghibli prompt came back as an oil painting of the woman against a green and gold wall, not as an animated frame. The likeness is very close to the original, which is the strength here, but "hand-painted" was read as oil on canvas. Say "anime", "cel shaded" or "flat colour with outlines" when you want a drawing, or use Nano Banana 2.1, which gave the clearest Ghibli look in our test.

PromptRepaint this photo as a hand-painted animated film frame in the Studio Ghibli style, soft painted textures and warm light. Keep the person recognisable.
  • Likeness kept, style off-target
  • 29 seconds

Tips for better Grok Imagine results

Name the style outright. "Hand-painted" gave an oil painting; "anime" or "cel shaded" is the safer word for a drawing.

Use text prompts for a pair of takes. In the text run we counted, two images came back for the 5 credits.

Send lettering with a specific style to GPT Image 2, which followed "cursive" much more closely.

When to pick Grok Imagine

Grok Imagine costs 5 credits a run, like Nano Banana 2.1 and Seedream 5.0 Lite, and has no resolution or quality picker: you choose only the aspect ratio. In our tests it was fast, faithful on faces and strong on warm, photographic light.

A good use is a quick, good-looking first pass: run a prompt for 5 credits, often get two takes, and decide whether to refine on a premium model.

Grok Imagine questions

What is Grok Imagine?

Grok Imagine is xAI's image model. It creates pictures from text and edits photos from a written instruction.

How much does Grok Imagine cost here?

5 credits a run, at any aspect ratio. Credits come in one-time packs from $4.99 and never expire. A failed image costs nothing.

Is Grok Imagine free?

No. A new account gets 5 free credits, which pays for one Grok Imagine run.

How fast is it?

18 to 22 seconds for text prompts and 16 to 29 seconds for photo edits in our runs.

How many images does it make at once?

In the runs we counted, a text prompt returned two images and a photo edit returned one. The tool shows every image that comes back.

Can Grok Imagine edit a photo I upload?

Yes. Upload up to 5 photos and describe the change. It kept the face in our headshot edit.

What if Grok Imagine is unavailable?

Is this the official Grok Imagine site?

AI Photo Editor is an independent site. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by the company that makes the model; model names belong to their owners.
